GENERAL FAQs

Ring sizes

All our ready-to-wear rings are listed with standard UK sizing (using alphabetic numbering). If you are unsure of your ring size, we recommend you order an Alloy Jewellery Gallery ring sizing kit or alternatively stop by your local jeweller to have your finger measured, keeping in mind that your ring size will differ depending on the width of a ring as well as the weather.

There are several ways described online to determine your ring size, we do not advise using the string or paper method nor matching the inside diameter of a ring to a printed circle. These methods are generally not accurate.

Our ready-to-wear rings from the Beautifully Flawed™ collection are not suitable for sizing as the gems must be removed to size our rings. If the ring you are interested in isn’t available in your ring size, we will gladly custom make something similar for you, using the gemstone(s) of your choice.

When placing a custom order from within South Africa we will send you a complimentary ring sizing kit with detailed instructions for use, to ensure we get your ring size right, the first time.

If you have any questions about ring sizes, feel free to get in touch.

Returns and exchanges

READY TO WEAR ITEMS

We guarantee the quality of our work, however, we understand you may be hesitant to buy jewellery online that you cannot see in person. For this reason, we accept returns and exchanges on all our ready-to-wear items, provided that we are notified within 3 days and the item must be returned to us within 7 working days: unworn and in the original packaging with your proof of purchase. Should you be returning a ready-to-wear item, we do not accept any responsibility for loss or damage until it is safely back in our hands.

Once received by us, the item will be inspected for signs of wear and/or damage and if your return is approved, we will refund your purchase price, minus the shipping cost. We reserve the right to refuse returned items we deem as not in sellable condition, damaged, altered, or worn.

We will refund your purchase on the following conditions:

- If you choose to return a ready-to-wear piece of jewellery, you need to notify us within 3 days at edna@alloygallery.co.za, stating your reason for the return and we’ll supply you with the return shipping address.

- The item must be returned to us within 7 days from the date the item was delivered to you.

- The item must be unworn and undamaged.

- The jewellery must be returned in all the original packaging with a copy of your proof of purchase.

- We can assist with arranging return shipping; however, we do not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to the item until it is safely back in our hands.

- We do not offer refunds on the shipping cost of your order, and we do not cover return shipping costs.

- If the item is returned to us in its original condition, we will process your refund (minus shipping cost). The amount should reflect in your bank account within 5-7 working days.

- Refunds will only be made to the account from which your payment was received.

CUSTOM ITEMS

All Alloy Jewellery Gallery custom-made pieces are considered final sale and cannot be returned.

Our custom jewellery is inspired by you, designed for you, and made just for you. It is unique to your specific style and requirements. Most of our diamonds and gemstones for custom orders are sourced and purchased specifically for each design on our customers' behalf. Because of that, we do not accept returns or offer refunds or cancellations after you’ve made payment to secure your gemstone(s) or accepted our final quote to begin production (whichever comes first).

We guarantee that your final jewellery item will match the CAD drawing and 3D renders we submit to you of the final design you approved prior to starting production. This includes the actual dimensions of the item, gemstone specifications and metal choice.

Warrantees and guarentees

We guarantee our quality and workmanship, however, jewellery is not indestructible. It is only as durable as tiny pieces of metal or gemstones can be. The daintier the items are the more fragile they become.

As much as we would love to offer a lifetime guarantee on all our jewellery, we cannot do this with a clear conscience. We believe that offering a lifetime guarantee is misleading as it only applies to ‘normal wear’. Some people wear their jewellery for 4 months and it looks like it’s been chewed others wear items daily for 5 years and it still looks like the day they received it. Based on that, normal wear is different for each person and each lifestyle.

Having said that, we guarantee our jewellery will last a lifetime if you look after it. We believe in honesty and transparency and will always accept responsibility if damage to an item is due to a manufacturing fault/defect on our side. We are not liable for any damage or loss of an item/gemstone beyond our control or due to normal wear and tear or lack of appropriate jewellery maintenance.

We recommend having your jewellery professionally cleaned, polished, and inspected at least once a year as part of standard maintenance. This keeps your jewellery looking beautiful and your gemstones secure. We'd be happy to do this maintenance for you.

We strongly urge you to take out personal insurance to cover you for loss, theft, and/or accidental damage to your jewellery, especially items you wear daily and/or expensive items. We offer free valuations on all our custom-made engagement and wedding rings.

As part of our custom design process, taking your lifestyle into account, we will discuss the durability and wearability of each design with you to ensure you make informed decisions about any jewellery we custom make for you.

What we do guarantee:

- We have stringent quality checks in place and will not deliver an item of jewellery to you if we are not satisfied with the quality.

- We will make 100% certain that you are informed about any special care instructions your jewellery/gemstones may require.

- Should a small accent diamond/gemstone under 2mm in size fall out of its setting within the first 3 months after purchase we will replace the diamond/gemstone free of charge if there is no visible damage to the item which may have contributed to the loss of the gem. This guarantee does not apply to any diamonds/gemstones larger than 2mm in diameter as the metal prongs used to secure larger diamonds/gemstones increase in size proportionate to the size of the gemstone.
This means they are visible to the naked eye and signs of wear and/or damage to metal prongs, or a loose diamond/gemstone would be noticeable through self-inspection of your jewellery.

Please note:

Our guarantees and/or warranties will be void if your jewellery is sized, altered, or worked on by anyone other than Alloy Jewellery Gallery.

Jewellery care and maintenance

Jewellery is delicate and needs special care and appropriate storage. Be sure to remove and store your jewellery safely before doing work which involves contact with chemicals or activities that might cause damage to the surface or shape of your items.

Professional cleaning and/or inspection of your jewellery is recommended as often as once a year or depending on how frequently it is worn. This will keep your jewellery looking beautiful and your gemstones secure. We'd be happy to do this maintenance for you.

Most jewellery can be cleaned at home with a non-abrasive cleaner between professional services. Regularly clean and inspect your jewellery to ensure that the settings are firmly holding gemstones in place and that clasps and joins are secure. Damaged prongs, joins or clasps can result in the loss of a gemstone stone or an entire piece of jewellery.

Prong settings are especially delicate and may loosen if they are struck against something hard or snagged on clothing or bedding. We advise that you avoid wearing rings/jewellery with prong settings whilst sleeping as the risk of prongs snagging and loosening increases drastically.

Exposing your jewellery to household cleaning agents and/or chemicals, perfumes, extreme temperatures, and cosmetics may cause severe damage to precious metals and gemstones and should be avoided.

We do not advise swimming while wearing jewellery. Exposing your jewellery to chlorine may deteriorate solder joints and can contribute to jewellery or chains breaking. Chains are particularly at risk of damage caused by chlorine.
Cold water temperatures cause fingers to shrink which increases the risk of losing your rings. Many people have lost jewellery in pools, on the beach or in the ocean – don’t be one of them!

Is it safe to do gardening or go to the gym while wearing rings? NO! Gardening and gym equipment, particularly weight training equipment, are probably the worst things anyone can subject their jewellery to. You are bound to damage your jewellery by doing this, so don’t do it.

When buying jewellery from Alloy Jewellery Gallery we will make sure you are informed of any special care your jewellery may require. Should you have any questions or concerns about caring for your jewellery, please do not hesitate to contact us.

ENGAGEMENT RING FAQs

What determines the cost of an engagement ring?

THE CENTRE STONE

This is usually where the bulk of the investment lies. Choosing the perfect gem for your engagement ring is an important decision and can be confusing and expensive. Is it worthwhile to invest in natural diamonds? Are lab diamonds a better option? What about salt and pepper diamonds, or moissanite? Or wait… what about a coloured gemstone? With so many options available the decision can be daunting. But don't worry, we've got your back! We’ll be your human Google and provide you with all the facts, leaving you confident and informed about your choices.

ACCENT STONES

The size and number of accent stones required for a design will affect the cost, however, if the overall size of a ring is an important factor accent stones can offer huge savings when compared to a larger single centre stone.

METAL TYPE

Your choice of metal affects the durability as well as the cost of your engagement ring. We’ll discuss all the details as part of our initial consultation so you can make an informed decision.

THE INTRICACY, COMPLEXITY, AND WEIGHT OF THE RING

The intricacy and complexity of a design can sometimes result in higher costs due to increased metal weight, labour costs for hand assembly, hand finishing and/or crafting sculptural elements.

Are custom-designed engagement rings more expensive?

On most occasions, the cost will be less or equal to what you will pay for an engagement ring off a shelf in a retail store. Considering your custom ring will be truly unique, designed and made especially for you, there is absolutely no comparison. Investing in custom jewellery always offers the best value for your money.

How long does the custom-design process take?

Our engagement rings are made from scratch, designed to your specific requirements, and made just for you. Please allow a timeline of 4 to 6 weeks for custom-made engagement rings.

The duration depends on how busy we are and how long it takes to finalise your design and/or source your ideal diamonds and/or gemstones. Typically, a custom engagement ring will be ready for delivery within 3 weeks from receiving your deposit to secure your diamonds or gemstones. Should you require a shorter timeline, please enquire with us and we will advise if we are able to accommodate you.

Who will be designing my ring?

When it comes to the custom jewellery experience at Alloy Jewellery Gallery you'll be working with Edna, the owner and founder. As an award-winning jewellery designer with over 20 years’ expertise in the design and manufacture of fine jewellery, you’re assured of being in good hands.

Will I receive a valuation with my engagement ring?

Yes, we issue valuation certificates with all our custom-made engagement rings.

Do you work with diamonds or gemstones not supplied by Alloy Jewellery Gallery?

Yes, we love breathing new life into heirloom pieces, sentimental items, or pieces you no longer wear. All gemstones not supplied by us will be inspected for visible damage prior to removing them from your old jewellery, and we will notify you if the gems are not suitable for use. Chips and damage to gemstones may however not always be visible prior to removing them from their settings and we cannot guarantee that some gems will not chip when removing them.

Please note that although we take the utmost care when working with gemstones/diamonds supplied by you, we do not accept any liability for loss or damage to gemstones/diamonds not supplied by Alloy Jewellery Gallery.

Are your diamonds certified?

All our diamonds over 0.30ct are certified and sourced from legitimate sources. We do not keep any diamonds in stock as we source all our diamonds according to the exact requirements of our clients.

Do you have engagement rings in stock?

No, we do not stock ready-made engagement rings. All our engagement rings are designed and made to order, and all diamonds and gemstones are sourced specifically for each design on behalf of our clients.

What if the engagement ring doesn’t fit?

We offer one free resize on all our engagement rings provided that the ring is suitable for resizing and the difference is no more than two ring sizes larger or smaller.

Some rings may not be suitable for resizing. If we make a ring for you that is not suitable for resizing, we will advise you of this during the design process and assist you to make sure that we get the ring size 100% right from the start.

Any rings that must be remade due to incorrect ring sizes supplied by the client, will incur additional costs to remake.

I don’t know my partner’s ring size, what do I do?

If you are within South Africa, we’ll send you an Alloy Jewellery Gallery ring sizing kit, free of charge, and we’ll provide you with detailed instructions for use.

The second-best option would be to pop into your local jeweller to have your finger measured, taking the width of the ring into account. Ring sizes become larger in relation to the width of a ring. We recommend getting your finger measured by more than one jeweller as ring sizing kits are not always perfectly calibrated.

We do not accept responsibility for incorrect ring sizes supplied to us by clients and depending on the design of the ring, there may be a resizing or remaking cost involved.

Can I return a custom-made engagement ring?
